Today there was some rich spam in my filters. Addressed to someone named "a8f0e" it said:

Based on your excellent publication record, we are pleased to invite you
to submit a paper to one of the following multi, inter, and trans
disciplinary conferences

I don't know anybody here by the name of "a8f0e", and google could not find a publication record either.

What google could find was that the conference this was for, "VIPSI", has already accepted a SCIGen paper, the infamous generator for important looking but completely meaningless reasearch papers.

On the weblog entry above, a "Prof. V. Milutinovic." defends the conference. I believe that VIPSI is a real conference when he shows me the "excellent publication record" for Mr. or Ms. a8f0e.

British imam praises London Tube bombers

I think the most interesting part of the article is this:

'When asked whether [Hamid Ali] believed that [the bombers'] actions were good, he said: I dont know what they died for, thats what I said . . . According to our faith, everything depends on what their intention is. I dont know what their intention is"'

So, a tube bombing can be a good thing if your intention is the right one? Really?

Scientifically correct popsongs

So you thought, musicians were some artsy folk who had no appreciation for Science?
Nerds like me everywhere will be delighted that after a complaint from Simon Singh, Katie Melua has corrected her hit "Nine Million Bicycles", at least for the BBC Today show.

However, Mr. Singh acknowledged that the scientifically incorrect version sounds better, and thus, the changed version will stay a one time event.

Spam as CAN-SPAM

Regardless of the CAN-SPAM Act of 2003, Spam seems to be on the rise again. Most of it is luckily found in filters of various sorts, but lets at a my main eMail account to see how many fabulous offers I got yesterday...
